Treated Like
A Dog
It was
treatment that wasn't fit for a dog. The fact that it happened to a
dog only makes owner Gerda Friedl more angry. The Keswick woman left
Vienna last Friday with her faithful friend in tow. When she
switched to Air France's plane in Paris, she was assured her dog was
onboard. She arrived in Toronto -- but Yazoo didn't.
And it wasn't until 40 agonizing hours later on Saturday that the
dog showed up -- much the worse for wear. "She lost about 50% of her
body weight in fluids," reveals veterinarian Dr. Cliff Redford.
"It'd be like me losing 7.5 pounds in the course of a day."
After repeated calls, Air France apologized. "I'm sure that some
sort of compensation will be offered," said Marc LaForge. And so
will some sort of investigation. The Canadian Food Inspection
Agency, which governs humane conditions of animals on airlines, is
looking into the incident. August 8, 2000
